PGR Research Poster Competition 2024: Expressions of Interest

The University Graduate School is hosting the Postgraduate Research Festival on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th of June 2024, a key part of which is our annual Research Poster Competition!

This is the biggest celebration of postgraduate research at the University of Birmingham, giving postgraduate researchers from different disciplines the opportunity to share their research with academics, other members of the University, and their fellow researchers. All University of Birmingham Postgraduate Researchers (PhD, MRes, Higher doctorates etc.) are invited to exhibit a research poster as part of the event.

We really want to celebrate the breadth of outstanding research undertaken by PGRs here at UoB - whether you're looking at diversity issues within the publishing industry, are conducting ground-breaking cancer research, or are disproving a centuries-old theorem, we would love to have you take part in this year's Research Poster Competition!

This year, all submitted research posters will be hosted on an online platform to allow hybrid interaction, with applicants invited to share their poster at the Postgraduate Research Festival in person on Wednesday 19th of June 2024. The Poster Team will print and display your poster on your behalf - so there is no cost involved in submitting a poster.  

  • All applicants will be invited to submit a poster for the event 
  • All applicants will receive an invite to a Canvas course, which will provide guidance and support on designing a poster suitable for the event, as well how their posters will be judges
    • This year, there will be prizes for the top three posters overall (£400/£300/£200, respectively), best poster from each college (£150 per college), and a People's Choice Award (£150).
    • We also have four optional themed awards (£100 each): when you submit your poster, you can opt-in to be considered for these. They are for Research into Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, Inclusive Research Design, Research into Sustainability, and, celebrating the 2024 Festival theme of 'Collaboration and Connection', Award for Collaborative Research.
  • All applicants will receive an invite to the e-poster system ('Learning Toolbox') and further details on how to submit their poster by the May 17th deadline.  
  • If you would like your poster to be considered for a prize you must;
    • Be available on the 18th and 19th of June to engage with other posters, respond to informal questions from your peers, University staff, and members of the public, and be responsive on the e-poster chat function.
    • Be available, if shortlisted, to attend an in-person session on the 19th of June to discuss your poster and answer questions from our judges. If you are registered as a distance student we will provide alternative options to discuss your poster.

You can use your thesis title as a placeholder but your final poster title should be short, engaging and free of jargon so that is understandable to and attracts non-specialists' attention.
